India still unfriendly towards its physically challenged citizens
Jayashree | Mar 18 2007

It is an unjust world for differently-abled persons. Especially, if you are living in India. It is almost impossible for a physically disabled person to buy a ticket, to access a bus, or even move on their own without facing barriers both physically and mentally.

There are over two-crore disabled persons in the country as per the 2001 census. Yet, the government has failed to execute its responsibilities to enhance access for the disabled.

It is really disheartening to note that the country’s most prominent monuments, some of which are World Heritage Sites lack even the basic facilities like signages, lifts, ramps with handrails for easy and safe access for the differently abled.

Improvements, if any, have taken place at a snail’s pace and those that have taken place have been due to the unyielding perseverance of change makers like Mr. Javed Abidi, who underwent a fast-unto-death in 2004, which ended with the Supreme Court’s order to put up ramps at all polling areas in the state.

The country needs more and more people like Javed Abidi to fight for and to work towards the elimination of discrimination against disabled people.Else, a barrier free world would continue to be a distant dream for the disabled.
